DO-254, also called DO254 and D0-254, or simply just “254”, is the worldwide avionics hardware standard with which all airborne hardware is required to comply. DO254 is considered the world’s strictest hardware standard, and influences other domains including medical devices, transportation, and telecommunications. Importance for Aviation Maintenance

The DO-254 standard is currently undergoing a significant update to address advancements in technology and new regulatory expectations. While the original standard has been in use since 2000, recent guidance from the FAA (AC 20-152A) and EASA (AMC 20-152A) has nearly doubled the objectives for modern airborne electronics.

Key developments in the current status of DO-254

  • New Working Groups: A major refresh of the standard is underway, led by the new EUROCAE Working Group (WG) 128 and its corresponding RTCA Special Committee (SC) 243. This effort aims to consolidate existing guidance and address the complexities of modern airborne electronic hardware.
  • Technology Refresh: The new work aims to ensure that the standard covers modern technologies such as System on a Chip (SoC), Multi-Core Processors (MCP), and new development techniques like Model-Based Development (MBD).
  • Clarified Guidance: The FAA and EASA have released new documents, such as AC 20-152A and AMC 20-152A, to provide clarification and additional objectives for DO-254 compliance. These documents bring a more harmonized approach between the two regulatory bodies.
  • Focus on Traceability and Verification: There is a strong emphasis on traceability, which involves maintaining clear, verifiable links between requirements, design, and verification activities. The standard also promotes the use of qualified tools to automate processes, improve efficiency, and reduce errors.

The standard is becoming more objective-based and less prescriptive, giving organizations more flexibility in how they achieve compliance.
